What to do and eat in Guadalajara, Mexico as a tourist

So a while ago I had a friend visit my home town Guadalajara, Mexico and I wasn't there to be her guide because I was living in Brazil. I sat down and wrote her some tips about what to do and I actually began to miss my home town so I guess that's a good indicator that these tips are good.

Activities

- Tequila Cuervo hacienda in Tequila ( you can take the cheapest tour they have there then make sure you buy some glasses of Tequila Cuervo Reserva de la Familia )
- You can take the open bar train to Tequila, world class experience which includes the tour, book way ahead and take the train roundtrip (different experience both ways) - http://www.tequilaexpress.com.mx/

For things to do besides going to Tequila which is like an hour or so drive you can go to Tlaquepaque to where the walking streets are for crafts, this is nice. If you have more time you can visit some round pyramids called "guachimontones" about an hour drive from Guadalajara; if you go outside of the rainy season be prepared for heavy sun. Of course Guadalajara downtown has lots of historical buildings and sights, no good food though. To get downtown just have the taxi drop you off at the "Teatro Degollado" and behind the teatro is the "Plaza Tapatia" and you can walk there. One of the most famous saloons is "La Fuente" which you can walk to from the Teatro Degollado to have a Tequila. If you are bored and want to hang out, go to "Andares" and sit on one of the patios in any restaurant that overlooks the fountains.

Restaurants

1. La Matera - Argentinian, its not my favorite in meats, it's a real nice terrace and crowded, however my favorite dish there which es extraordinary are "mollejas al verdeo". You can eat them in tacos.

2. La Docena - this is the cooked oyster place you can eat rockefeller oysters or tabasco oysters, they have shrimp with like "salsa inglesa" which are really good as well. They have the best dessert in town, "volcán de dulce de leche"

I went with a friend of mine to this place, the next day before going to the airport she stopped by just to eat this dessert again and head back out to her country.

3. La Tequila - they have ant eggs, tequila worms, tortilla soup and other Mexican stuff. I like the tequila worms in tacos.
4. Santo Coyote - this place is beautiful at night, I mean really nice. The food is Mexican, it's ok food but they have Mariachi and Mexican folk dancers. You should really go at night there, it's really big so probably you won't need a reservation but it's good to call and get the show times.
5. La Vaca Argentina - this is a very nice Argentinian place, located in the shopping mall "Andares", the meat is really nice. Have the "vacío" meat, medium well. When I came back from South America I was craving for meat like that, they have none in South America as good.
6. Suehiro - this is my favorite Japanese, it's like Benihana where they cook on the table for you, it might be pricier for Guadalajara standards but it's worth it. The curry fried rice is super nice.
7. Tacos Providencia - this are like the most famous tacos in Guadalajara, they are nice, not the best, but way above average
8. Recco - nice Italian place, I like here the ravioli pesto to start and their best dish is a meat called "cacharro", this is really nice
9. Tratorria - this is the most famous Italian place in Guadalajara as it has like the best price/quality ratio. We go there every week and I order parmigiana chicken.
10. Mr. Pampas - Brazilian swords restaurant, its like 30 dollars all you can eat but its like super nice quality meat. I love for the desert fried breaded bananas with "lechera" which is condensed milk with sugar.
11. Karne Garibaldi - This has the Guinness world record of fastest restaurant in the world. Its pretty cheap, they only serve meat broth and its very nice, they offer yummy beans with lard as well as tortilla and fried onions for free as a snack, might be tough on the untrained stomach. The broth itself is easygoing.
12. La Estación de Lulio - this is good for breakfast, get the "chilaquiles con huevos estrellados montados", they are great.
13. Abajeño - if you plan to go to Tlaquepaque which is a very nice touristic area where they sell arts and crafts, you can eat here. It's like very Mexican food and they have Mariachi and such. You can sit on "equipales" which are very confortable traditional Mexican chairs that are like couches a bit. They won't let you fall off after some Tequilas.

14. Los Arcos - seafood place, they have lots of stuff but my favorite there are the "taco gobernador" and "taco de pulpo". I usually just eat that there although they have lot's of seafood dishes.
15. El Carnal ( mariscos ) - you have to go to the original one which is in "glorieta Niños Heroes con Lopez Mateos". I usually eat there tostadas with seafood like crab, squid, marlin, etc. Marlin is pretty good.
16. Tortas Toño - one of Guadalajaras' dishes is "torta ahogada" which is a torta that you drown in spicy sauce. You can ask for it not be that spicy, I like them. Traditionally good for hangovers.
17. Fogon do Brasil - this is also a Brazilian type place, way cheaper than Mr. Pampas, specially at night if you pay cash (checkout if they have this promo), it has less meat options but for 1/3 the price I go there often. I like the "mollejas" there as well, which is more Argentinian but oh well :P

Tequila

Tequila is like wine, what matters is if you like it, so "give me your best Tequila" just means "give me the most expensive item in the menu" but doesn't mean anything and the taste is different for everyone.

The one I drink the most when I'm out is called "Herradura Antiguo reposado", so I ask for it like this "un tequila herradura antiguo reposado derecho en copita (no shot) y un chaser de agua mineral"; that's my "shaken, not stirred explanation". It's inexpensive and widely available so good to have many of them. Don't use the shot glass, good tequila has a good smell that is part of the taste, use a small cognac glass (widely available). Good tequila you sip, don't shoot.

If you wan't something smoother, you can try "Maestro Tequilero Dobel". It's modern type of distillation process that has less alcohol so people find it smoother, it's more expensive than the other one but worth it to try out a few.

Many people say the original Tequila is the "tequila blanco" (not to be confused with the previous one which is also transparent but it's of type "cristalino"). Try it out, I do sometimes, the taste is stronger and has other flavors from the catcus you can taste. It's called: 1800 blanco.

Mezcal

The Tequila's cousin, Mezcal, has been gaining popularity and quality. It's kind of similar but made from other species of cacti and with a different process, usually smoked vs. baked like Tequila. I like the this one "Amores, espadín joven", it's on the more expensive side.
